Who Is Winning the AEO Category in 2026?
Gartner published its Market Guide. Profound hit a $1B valuation. We tore down every AEO product — engine coverage, data methodology, pricing, and what each one actually does when you open it.
In March 2026, Gartner published its inaugural Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools. A month earlier, Profound closed a $96M Series C at a $1B valuation. G2 now lists both an "Answer Engine Optimization" category and a sibling "AI Search Visibility Optimization Tools" category with seven distinct products between them.

This is not a speculative category anymore. The question is no longer "does AEO matter?" It is: which of these products actually measures how AI engines talk about your brand — and which ones are selling you something else with an AEO label?
This post is a teardown. For each product, I went deep: what engines does it actually query, where does its data come from, what do you see when you open the dashboard, and what can you actually do with the output.
Disclosure: I founded unCited.ai, which competes in this space. I will include it in the analysis and be transparent about where it falls short.
The capability map
Engine coverage
The most basic question: which AI engines does each tool actually query? The answer is more nuanced than any vendor's marketing page suggests.
Engine Coverage Matrix
Which AI engines each tool queries at the prompt level. Tier-gating matters — check what your actual plan includes.
| Tool | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Gemini | Claude | Google AIO | Copilot | Grok | Meta AI | DeepSeek |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | ✓ | ENT | ENT | ENT | ENT | ENT | ENT | ENT | ENT |
| Brandlight | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Semrush | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ENT | ✓ | — | ENT | — | ENT |
| Similarweb | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | REF | ✓ | REF | REF | — | REF |

| Visby | ✓ | SOON | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | — | — |
| Otterly | ✓ | ✓ | ADD | — | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — |
| Peec AI | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — |
| unCited.ai | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | — | — |
Two things jump out. First, Claude is poorly covered — only Profound (Enterprise), Brandlight, Visby, and unCited.ai track it at the prompt level. For a model with over 100 million users, that is a gap. Second, engine coverage is heavily gated by pricing tier. Profound's $99/mo Starter plan only covers ChatGPT. You need Enterprise (likely $2,000+/mo) for the full ten-engine suite.
Where the data actually comes from
This is the question most buyers skip and the one that matters most. Two tools can both claim to "track ChatGPT visibility," but their data can come from completely different sources.
Data Methodology
How each tool sources its prompt data and how often it refreshes.
| Tool | Consumer Panel | Clickstream | Direct API | UI Scraping | Refresh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | ✓ | — | ✓ | — | Daily |
| Brandlight | — | — | ✓ | — | Daily |
| Semrush | — | ✓ | ✓ | — | Daily |
| Similarweb | ✓ | — | ✓ | — | Daily |
| Birdeye | — | — | — | ✓ | Daily |
| Visby | — | — | ✓ | — | 30 days |
| Otterly | — | — | ✓ | — | Weekly |
| Peec AI | — | — | ✓ | — | Daily |
| unCited.ai | — | — | ✓ | — | Weekly |
Profound and Similarweb have real user prompt panels — they see what actual humans are asking AI engines, not what a product team guessed buyers might ask. That is a genuine data moat. Semrush combines clickstream with Google keyword data to build a 317M+ prompt index. Birdeye takes a different approach entirely: UI-based tracking that captures responses from the actual product interfaces. Everyone else — including unCited.ai — designs prompts internally and runs them against APIs.
What you can do with the output
Action Capabilities
Monitoring is step one. What happens after you see the data?
| Tool | Monitor | Alerts | Content Gen | CMS Push | Tasks | Custom Prompts | API |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | ENT |
| Brandlight | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | — |
| Semrush | ✓ | ✓ | ~ | — | — | ~ | ENT |
| Similarweb | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | ✓ | — |
| Birdeye | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | — | — |
| Visby | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| Otterly | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | ✓ | — |
| Peec AI | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — | ✓ | — |
| unCited.ai | ✓ | — | ✓ | — | — | — | — |
Profound is the only tool that closes the loop from measurement to content creation to CMS publishing in one product. Visby and unCited.ai also include content generation, but without CMS integration. Most tools stop at the dashboard.
The teardowns
Profound
The $1B category creator — deepest data, steepest learning curve
The real differentiator — Conversation Explorer. Profound licenses conversations from double opt-in consumer panels. 1.5B+ real user prompts. This means you can see what actual humans are asking ChatGPT about your category — not what Profound guessed they might ask. No other tool has this dataset at this scale.
The Agents. Drag-and-drop builder with nodes for LLM prompting, knowledge base retrieval, Brand Kit injection, and CMS publishing (WordPress, Sanity, Contentful). Each Agent queries 16 reasoning models before drafting. Every run has an approval step. This turns visibility gaps into published content without leaving the platform.
The catch. The $99/mo Starter covers ChatGPT only with 50 tracked prompts. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews require Growth at $399/mo. The full suite requires Enterprise. Ramp's case study (7x AI visibility increase) was done on Enterprise. The real product is behind the paywall.
Strengths
- +1.5B+ real user prompt dataset from consumer panels
- +Conversation Explorer shows what people actually ask AI
- +AI Agents close the loop: measure, generate, publish to CMS
- +Named in Forrester's AEO Technologies Landscape
Weaknesses
- -$99 Starter = ChatGPT only with 50 prompts
- -Full 10-engine suite requires Enterprise ($2K-5K/mo est.)
- -Steep learning curve — plan 4-8 weeks to fluency
- -No multi-account management (agencies blocked)
- -G2 reviews cite broken tracking and billing issues
If you have the budget and a dedicated analyst, Profound has the deepest data in the category. If you are a two-person marketing team, the Starter tier will frustrate you.
Brandlight AI
The enterprise challenger — broadest engine coverage, no self-serve
The unique modules. Partnerships Builder identifies which publishers drive AI engine citations for your category — if The Verge's review is the most-cited source across ChatGPT and Perplexity, Brandlight surfaces that. Agentic Commerce tracks how AI shopping agents rank products. These are forward-looking capabilities nobody else has.
The scoring transparency. Brandlight publishes its six-signal trust score weights: Citation Frequency 35%, Position Prominence 20%, Domain Authority 15%, Content Freshness 15%, Structured Data 10%, Security/Compliance 5%. Most competitors treat scoring as a black box.
Strengths
- +11 AI engines — broadest in the category, all tiers
- +Published trust score weights (35% citation frequency, 20% position, etc.)
- +Partnerships Builder identifies citation-driving publishers
- +Agentic Commerce module for AI shopping optimization
- +SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, SSO/SAML
Weaknesses
- -No public pricing (returns 404). Mandatory sales call
- -No free trial, no self-service signup
- -Enterprise-only — explicitly excludes SMBs
- -No content generation or gap analysis
- -$200M ARR claim has no independent verification
Broadest engine coverage and most transparent scoring methodology. But you will not see the product until you talk to sales, and the price point excludes everyone except enterprise teams.
Semrush (Adobe)
The $1.9B SEO giant — real AI features, not just a checkbox
Not just SERP tracking anymore. The AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/mo add-on) runs a 317M+ prompt database against ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Daily refreshes. A 0-100 AI Visibility Score. This is a real AEO product, not a checkbox — though the prompt data comes from clickstream inference, not direct user conversations like Profound.
The free tool nobody talks about. Semrush offers a free AI Visibility Checker running your brand against 26M+ prompts across four engines. No account required. The most accessible free AEO check on the market.
Strengths
- +317M+ prompt database — second largest after Profound
- +Free AI Visibility Checker (no account, 26M+ prompts)
- +One dashboard combining SEO + AEO data
- +Adobe resources accelerating development
- +AI Search Optimizer scores drafts for citation factors
Weaknesses
- -$99/mo per domain — 10 brands = $990/mo before base sub
- -Only 25 tracked prompts on base plan
- -Claude, DeepSeek, Grok require Enterprise AIO (opaque pricing)
- -No CMS integration, no content execution
- -ContentShake AI optimizes for SEO signals, not AI citation
Safest buy for SEO teams adding AEO without a new vendor. The 317M+ prompt database is legitimate. But per-domain pricing punishes multi-brand teams, and the tool stops at measurement.
Similarweb
The clickstream hybrid — the only tool that proves AI drives traffic
The unique feature — AI Traffic. Similarweb can show you actual referral traffic from AI platforms to your website. Clickstream-observed, not estimated. Traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Grok. If AI is driving visitors to your site, this is the only tool that proves it with behavioral data.
Strengths
- +Clickstream panel of millions — sees real user prompts
- +AI Traffic proves AI recommendations drive actual visits
- +Hybrid: clickstream + direct LLM querying
- +Simple pricing: $99/mo, not per-domain
Weaknesses
- -Only 4 engines at prompt level (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode)
- -Claude, Copilot, Grok = traffic referral data only
- -No content generation or optimization
- -Panel-size bias if your audience is underrepresented
Best tool for proving AI-driven ROI to a CFO. If your question is 'is AI search sending us traffic?' this is the only product with clickstream-verified answers. If your question is 'what does Claude say about us?' look elsewhere.
Birdeye
The local visibility specialist — AEO at the location level
Not just reputation management. Birdeye's Search AI product (launched September 2025) is a genuine AEO platform. It queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing AI, and Google AI Overviews using UI-based tracking — capturing responses from the actual product interfaces, not just APIs.
The unique angle. No other AEO tool tracks visibility at the individual location level. If you manage 500 restaurant locations, Birdeye shows which ones AI recommends and which are invisible.
Strengths
- +Location-level AI visibility (100-10,000+ locations)
- +UI-based tracking captures actual LLM product responses
- +G2 Leader in AEO within one quarter of launch
- +Free AI Visibility Checker for single-location assessment
Weaknesses
- -Per-location pricing — 200 locations gets expensive fast
- -12-month contracts with $500-$15K onboarding
- -No Claude tracking
- -Primary product is reputation management, not pure AEO
Serious AEO capability for multi-location enterprises. Not relevant for most B2B SaaS companies — but for restaurants, healthcare, retail chains, and franchise brands, this is the only tool tracking AI visibility per location.
Visby AI
The mid-market action platform — monitoring + tasks + content at $79/mo
The action angle. Most AEO tools stop at measurement. Visby generates prioritized tasks (with titles, keywords, instructions, and acceptance criteria), organizes them in a Kanban board, and generates 5-25 articles per month. For a team that wants "tell me what to fix and help me fix it," this is the most complete sub-$200 option.
The 30-day problem. Data refreshes monthly. If you publish optimized content on day 2 and want to see the impact, you wait 28 more days. For active AEO campaigns, this is a dealbreaker.
Strengths
- +Monitoring + task management + content gen in one tool
- +GEO Task Engine auto-generates prioritized optimization tasks
- +Kanban board with team assignment
- +Funnel-stage tagging (Awareness/Consideration/Decision)
- +Lowest price for a full-action platform
Weaknesses
- -Only 3 engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
- -30-day refresh cycle — not fast enough for active campaigns
- -Perplexity and Google AI Mode still on roadmap
- -15 prompts/mo on Starter is thin
- -No named enterprise customers
Best value for a small team wanting monitoring + content execution in one tool under $200/mo. But the 30-day refresh and three-engine coverage will frustrate anyone used to daily data across four or more engines.
SOCi
The optimization layer — research product, not a tracking dashboard
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found that only 1.2% of locations were recommended on ChatGPT. That research is useful — but it is a report, not a dashboard. SOCi's product optimizes local presence so AI engines are more likely to recommend you, but it does not directly measure what AI answers say.
Strengths
- +Published 3.2M AI query research across 350K locations
- +Genius Search Agent optimizes local presence for AI readiness
- +Strong multi-location marketing platform (8 G2 Leader badges)
Weaknesses
- -No self-serve AI visibility dashboard
- -AI visibility data only surfaces through periodic reports and audits
- -Audit is consultant-led, not product-accessible
- -Core product is local SEO, not AEO measurement
Strong product in the wrong category. If you manage hundreds of locations and want local data clean for AI engines, SOCi does that. But it is not an AEO measurement tool — you cannot log in and see what ChatGPT says about your brand today.
Notable tools not on G2's AEO category
Otterly.ai
The accessible pure-play — Gartner Cool Vendor, lowest entry price
Strengths
- +Gartner Cool Vendor 2025
- +GEO Audit — 25+ factor AI-readiness assessment (unique)
- +$29/mo entry point — lowest in category
- +6 engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, AIO, Copilot, + add-ons
Weaknesses
- -Monitoring only — no content generation or optimization
- -No Claude tracking
- -Small team
Most accessible pure-play AEO tracker. The GEO Audit is unique. But monitoring-only — no content execution, no Claude tracking.
Scrunch AI
The CDN-level optimizer — serves AI-optimized content to crawlers
Strengths
- +AXP serves AI-optimized content at CDN layer (Akamai, Cloudflare, Vercel)
- +Hallucination detection
- +SOC 2 Type II
- +Up to 9 engines on Enterprise
Weaknesses
- -Best features locked behind Enterprise (~$1K+/mo)
- -Core plan: $250/mo with limited engines
- -Not on G2 AEO category
Most feature-complete tool not on G2. The Agent Experience Platform is a fundamentally different approach — instead of just measuring, it changes what AI crawlers see at the CDN layer.
HubSpot AEO
The CRM-integrated entry — cheapest if you are already a HubSpot customer
Strengths
- +Free for Marketing Hub Pro/Enterprise customers
- +CRM-powered prompt intelligence
- +$50/mo standalone — cheapest entry point
Weaknesses
- -Only 3 engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini)
- -Only 25 prompts
- -Still in beta
- -No Claude, no Copilot, no AI Overviews
Inferior product, superior distribution. For HubSpot shops that want basic AEO visibility at zero incremental cost, it exists. Not a serious standalone option.
Where unCited.ai fits — honestly
unCited.ai
Free. Four engines. Category-scale measurement for B2B SaaS.
Our path is the free Citation Index at category scale — a data asset that grows more valuable as more categories and weeks accumulate — plus content generation that helps brands improve their AI visibility, not just measure it. We do not have Profound's consumer panel, Brandlight's enterprise customers, or Semrush's distribution. What we have is the broadest free measurement-to-action surface for B2B SaaS brands without a budget approval.
Strengths
- +Free — no procurement cycle, no sales call
- +4 engines including Claude (most tools skip it)
- +Citation Index: 9,000+ brands across 280 categories
- +Content generation to improve AI visibility
- +Weekly re-measurement at category scale
- +Built specifically for B2B SaaS buyer journeys
Weaknesses
- -No CMS integration or content publishing workflow
- -No Google AI Overviews tracking
- -Scoring methodology still evolving (position data)
- -No alerts, no API, no SSO, no custom reporting
- -Prompts designed internally, not from user panels
Best for B2B SaaS marketers who want to understand AI visibility today without a procurement cycle. Not the right fit for enterprise teams, agencies, or anyone who needs action capabilities beyond a dashboard.
What survives vs. what gets absorbed
The Gartner Market Guide names five Representative Vendors: Evertune, Profound, Semrush, Siteimprove, and IQRush. Here is how I think the market sorts:
Durable category leaders. Profound and Brandlight have venture capital, distinct data assets, and enterprise customers. Profound's consumer panel and Brandlight's 11-engine breadth are not trivially replicable.
Incumbent features that win on distribution. Semrush (now Adobe) and HubSpot will win share through distribution, not innovation. If you already pay for Semrush, the $99/mo add-on is an easy yes — even if Profound's data is deeper.
Specialists that own a niche. Birdeye owns multi-location AI visibility. Scrunch owns CDN-layer optimization. Defensible niches that horizontal platforms will not prioritize.
The squeeze. Mid-market tools (Visby, Otterly, Peec, unCited.ai) face pressure from above (Profound/Brandlight getting cheaper) and below (Semrush/HubSpot bundling AEO for free). Survival requires a compounding data asset or a distribution channel the venture-backed tools cannot match.
How to evaluate: five questions before you buy
1. Which engines — at which tier? "We track 10 engines" means nothing if nine are behind Enterprise. Ask what your actual plan includes.
2. Where does the prompt data come from? Consumer panel (real user prompts) > clickstream-derived > internally designed. All can be useful. Know which one you are getting.
3. How do you define citation vs. mention vs. hallucination? A brand cited with a URL in position one of a Perplexity response is a fundamentally different signal from a brand mentioned in passing at character 1,100 of a Claude response. If the tool treats both as "mentioned," the score is noise.
4. What can I do with the output besides look at it? If the answer is "export to CSV," the tool is a report, not a platform. Ask about content generation, CMS integration, task management, and API access.
5. Show me the same prompt across engines over time. A snapshot tells you where you are. A trendline tells you whether your program is working. Check the refresh cadence — monthly data is not fast enough for active campaigns.
The AEO category is real. The Gartner Market Guide confirms it. $155M in a single company confirms it. The question is no longer whether to measure AI visibility — it is whether the tool you buy actually measures what it claims.
