Google AI Mode vs. AI Overviews: Same Query, Different Citations

We ran 170+ B2B software queries through both Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Same company, same search box — but the brands they cite diverge dramatically. Here's what we found.

Google now has two AI-powered answer surfaces: AI Overviews (the snippet that appears above organic results) and AI Mode (the full-page conversational experience users opt into). Both are built by Google. Both draw on Google's index. Both answer the same buyer queries.

They do not cite the same brands.

We analyzed 170+ B2B software topics across both surfaces using Profound visibility data from August–September 2026, covering 50 tracked brands and 31,000+ data points. The divergences we found aren't noise — they're structural. And they have direct implications for how you optimize your AEO strategy.

Two Surfaces, Two Citation Philosophies

The first thing that jumps out of the data is how differently each surface treats the same source material.

Google AI Overviews is a snippet engine. It pulls from whatever Google already ranks well — YouTube, Reddit, review sites — and compresses it into a quick answer above the blue links. It leans heavily on social proof and community content.

Google AI Mode is a conversational engine. Users opt in. They expect depth. And the citations reflect that: more vendor documentation, more analyst references, more direct product pages.

The Citation Source Divide

Here's where both surfaces get their information for B2B software queries. Same underlying index, materially different preferences:

Three patterns emerge:

AI Overviews favors community and editorial sources. Reddit gets 52% more citation share in AI Overviews. PCMag gets nearly double. Zapier (whose content is largely how-to guides) gets 85% more. This makes sense: AI Overviews is a summary layer on top of traditional search, and traditional search already favors content sites and social proof.

AI Mode favors vendor and review-platform content. Capterra's citation share is 67% higher in AI Mode. HubSpot gets 35% more. Medium and LinkedIn — platforms where vendors publish thought leadership — also skew toward AI Mode. The conversational format appears to value direct vendor authority more than community discussion.

The top two are stable. YouTube and G2 rank #1 and #2 on both surfaces. But everything below that shuffles significantly.

Brand Visibility: Who Wins Where

The overall brand rankings look similar at a glance — but dig into specific categories and the divergences get dramatic.

The Leaders (Averaged Across All Topics)

Top 5 Brands — Google AI Mode (avg. visibility across all topics)

G2
29.7%
HubSpot
19.7%
Coupa
19.3%
Rippling
16.7%
PostHog
16.2%

Top 5 Brands — Google AI Overviews (avg. visibility across all topics)

G2
29.6%
Procurify
23%
Coupa
22.4%
Apollo
18.7%
HubSpot
17.7%

G2 holds the #1 position on both surfaces at ~29.5% average visibility. But the rest of the top 5 shuffles: HubSpot is #2 on AI Mode but drops to #5 on AI Overviews. Procurify and Apollo don't appear in AI Mode's top 5 at all.

The story gets more interesting at the topic level.

The Rank Flips: Same Query, Different Winner

In roughly 28% of topics, the #1 brand on AI Mode is different from the #1 brand on AI Overviews — or the same brand leads with dramatically different margins. Here are the most striking examples:

Pricing Software: Leadership Flips Entirely

Salesforce leads AI Mode by 1.2 points. G2 leads AI Overviews by 6.3 points. Same query about pricing software — the two surfaces disagree on who the primary authority is.

"How to Automate" Queries: YouTube vs. QuickBooks

When users ask AI Mode how to automate business processes, QuickBooks is the #1 cited brand. When the same query triggers AI Overviews, YouTube leads at 35.21% — more than double QuickBooks' AI Overviews visibility. AI Overviews defaults to video-format how-to content; AI Mode surfaces the actual product.

Large Language Models: The Anthropic–Google Flip

In AI Mode, Anthropic ranks #2 ahead of Google for LLM queries. In AI Overviews — Google's own snippet surface — Google ranks #2 and Anthropic drops to #3. A small difference, but directionally interesting: AI Overviews appears to give its parent company a slight home-court advantage.

Key Takeaway

Approximately 28% of B2B software topics show a rank flip between AI Mode and AI Overviews — the #1 brand on one surface isn't #1 on the other. This means your AEO strategy can't treat "Google AI" as a single optimization target.

The G2 Paradox: #2 on AI Mode, #5 on AI Overviews

One of the most dramatic divergences is G2's own ranking on the "overall" software topic:

G2's visibility nearly halves — from 26.82% (#2) on AI Mode to 14.30% (#5) on AI Overviews. Meanwhile, Zoho climbs from #4 to #3 and Salesforce from #5 to #4.

Why? AI Mode's conversational format naturally generates more "best of" and "compare" queries where review platforms are the authoritative source. AI Overviews, triggered by shorter head-term queries, favors the platforms themselves.

The Dominance Ratio Gap

Some brands are dominant on both surfaces — but the degree of dominance varies wildly.

Virtual Data Room Software — G2's Dominance Ratio

AI Mode (G2 vs. Capterra)
3x
AI Overviews (G2 vs. Capterra)
16.1x

In Virtual Data Room Software, G2 leads on both surfaces. But on AI Mode, G2 is 3x Capterra's visibility. On AI Overviews, G2 is 16.1x Capterra's visibility — Capterra effectively disappears from AI Overviews answers (3.30%) while maintaining 15.64% on AI Mode.

This pattern repeats across multiple categories:

The pattern is clear: AI Overviews concentrates citations more aggressively. When a brand leads on both surfaces, its lead is typically wider on AI Overviews. This means second-place brands have more opportunity to compete in AI Mode's conversational format than in AI Overviews' compressed snippets.

The Agentic AI Exception: Where Third Parties Emerge

In the hot "Agentic AI" topic, the top two (HubSpot, Salesforce) are identical on both surfaces. But the mid-tier diverges: Jasper doesn't crack AI Mode's top 5 yet jumps to #3 on AI Overviews at 19.28%. Zapier, #3 on AI Mode, drops to #5 on AI Overviews.

This suggests AI Overviews favors brands with strong editorial/content marketing signals (Jasper has invested heavily in AI content thought leadership), while AI Mode rewards brands with stronger product-and-integration signals.

What This Means for Your AEO Strategy

The data points to five actionable conclusions:

1. You need to track both surfaces separately

If you're only monitoring "Google AI" as a single data point, you're averaging two very different signals. A brand that's #1 on AI Mode can be #5 on AI Overviews — and vice versa. Use a platform like Profound that separates the models, or you're flying blind on half your Google AI traffic.

2. AI Overviews rewards community presence; AI Mode rewards direct authority

If your traffic comes primarily from AI Overviews: invest in Reddit presence, earn editorial coverage (PCMag, Forbes), and ensure your G2/Capterra profiles are complete. If your buyers are more likely to use AI Mode: prioritize your own documentation, publish on Medium and LinkedIn, and build direct product content that AI Mode can cite.

3. Second-place brands should focus on AI Mode

AI Overviews concentrates citations. The leader wins bigger and the runner-up gets squeezed. AI Mode is more egalitarian — dominance ratios are typically smaller, and mid-tier brands maintain more visibility. If you're not the category leader, AI Mode is where you have room to compete.

4. Content format matters more than content quality (for now)

YouTube dominates AI Overviews for how-to queries (35.21%) but ranks #3 on AI Mode (20.26%). The same underlying content in a different format would get cited differently. If you're optimizing for AI Overviews, video content on YouTube matters. If you're optimizing for AI Mode, structured product content matters more.

5. Watch for the convergence

AI Mode is newer and still evolving. These divergences may narrow as Google refines both systems. But for now — and likely for the next 12-18 months — they behave as distinct citation channels that require distinct optimization strategies.

FAQ

Do AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same data?

Both surfaces draw from Google's search index, but they process it differently. AI Overviews acts more like a snippet engine — compressing high-ranking search results into a quick answer. AI Mode operates as a conversational agent that synthesizes information across more diverse sources. The result is materially different citation behavior for the same query.

Which Google AI surface drives more traffic?

AI Overviews reaches a far larger audience since it appears automatically in search results. AI Mode requires users to opt in, but those users tend to be higher-intent and more engaged. For B2B SaaS, the AI Mode user base skews toward active buyers doing product research — making it a smaller but potentially more valuable citation channel.

Can I optimize for both surfaces simultaneously?

Yes, but with different emphases. Community presence (Reddit, review sites) drives AI Overviews visibility. Direct authority signals (vendor documentation, thought leadership on Medium/LinkedIn, analyst coverage) drive AI Mode visibility. The overlap — G2 reviews, structured data, and strong entity signals — helps on both.

How often do brand rankings flip between the two surfaces?

In our dataset, approximately 28% of B2B software topics show a different #1 brand between AI Mode and AI Overviews. The flips are most common in competitive, multi-vendor categories like pricing software, automation tools, and marketing platforms. Ecosystem-specific topics (e.g., "Salesforce AppExchange Apps") are stable across both surfaces.

Is Google AI Mode replacing AI Overviews?

No — they serve different user intents. AI Overviews augments traditional search for quick informational queries. AI Mode is a separate, opt-in conversational experience for deeper research. Google has shown no indication of merging them, and both are receiving active investment.
